1. When should you seek counseling?
a. Everyone may need help addressing problems and issues that cause
us emotional distress or make us feel overwhelmed. When you or someone
you love, is experiencing these types of difficulties, you may benefit
from the assistance of an experienced, trained professional. Counselors
offer the caring, expert assistance that we often need during these
stressful times. A counselor can help you identify your problems
and assist you in finding the best ways to cope with the situation
by changing behaviors that contribute to the problem or by finding
constructive ways to deal with a situation that is beyond your personal
control.
2. What is counseling?
a. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and
client. Counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions
to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication
and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior
change and optimal mental health. Through counseling you examine
the behaviors, thoughts and feelings that are causing difficulties
in your life. You learn effective ways to deal with your problems
by building upon personal strengths. A counselor will encourage
your personal growth and development in ways that foster your interest
and welfare.
3. Will my health insurance cover counseling?
a. Currently, Evolve only accepts Medicaid, and Famis insurances.
If your child is involved with FAPT (Family Assessment and Planning
Team) or a program utilizing 294 funding you may be eligible. If
you have Medicaid, and meet the service criteria, the services provide
to your child will be at no cost to you. If you currently do not
have Medicaid, or any of the above mentioned programs, you may seek
these services or visit another provider site.
4. How long does counseling take?
a. The number of treatment sessions needed to achieve desired goals
can vary greatly. Your Services are tailored to your child’s
individual needs and also depends on their participation. Intensive-In-home
counseling is a time limited service (up to 26 weeks). If a condition
is severe or has developed over a long period of time, it may take
longer to resolve, and an extension may be requested.
5. Is everything I say confidential?
a. We understand that clients are often concerned about their privacy
and confidentiality. Any information disclosed to us (including
case notes, records, and psychological test results) is confidential
and cannot be disclosed without the client’s consent. If there
is any need to disclose information from files with another professional
(for example a medical doctor, lawyer, pastor or third party billing
source), the client will be consulted first and asked to sign a
release of information document. There are some legal limitations
to confidentiality, however, which your treatment specialist will
discuss with you during your first session.
6. What are the benefits of counseling?
a. Some of the possible benefits of counseling include;
• improved communication
• enhanced relationships
• a happier family
• peace of mind
• improved self-esteem
• more satisfaction out of life
• personal growth
7. What should I expect in a typical session?
a. Much of what happens in a counseling session is up to you. You
will bring up the topics for discussion including what concerns
you have and any thoughts or feelings you may have about these concerns.
You might also talk about things you have done to try to resolve
the problem or any new concerns that arise while you are in counseling.
The counselor’s job will be to listen to your concerns, help
you clarify the nature of them, and help to generate possible strategies
and solutions. In addition to talking those things through with
you, your counselor may teach you specific skills such as relaxation
and assertiveness, or help you learn to better recognize and identify
feelings.
